Agricultural Technology, or AgTech, is an industry poised for tremendous growth, especially in Latin America. Although Latin American producers have long been among the most innovative, until now the region has failed to provide a backdrop that fostered a collaborative development of technologies in the AgTech space. However, with new initiatives from top agricultural companies that are increasing investment and support of the sector, the industry is set up for unprecedented growth.
Latin America is an excellent candidate for the existence of a healthy AgTech sector. In addition to plentiful resources, the region has a long and storied agricultural history. Nevertheless, crop yields in many sectors trail those of more developed peers and new farming methods can be slow to be implemented. As such, the benefits of a healthy AgTech ecosystem will be seen broadly and rapidly.
FIELDS OF PROMISE
In June 2016 Quarterra and Valoral Advisors produced a study covering the state of the AgTech industry in South America and opportunities for growth. The report, called 'Fields of Promise: The Untapped Investment Potential of the South American AgTech Space' found that the sector is primed for investment. The paper provides an outline of the various investment opportunities and includes a roadmap for those interested in pursuing investment opportunities. Over 60 active regional start-ups are profiled.
